The above link is to an article I researched and wrote for the local newspaper, the Las Vegas Review-Journal . I had never covered boys' volleyball before and had to start from nearly scratch. I honestly did not know how involved the process was and I f'd-up the assignment. I learned from my mistake and did a lot better job in September with three new previews. Sierra Vista ended up winning the state championship losing one match all season (24-1). I had wanted to put them more at the stop but I could never get their coach on the phone. Oh well. The team they beat, Cimarron-Memorial (16-6), I did not even have in the feature at all. I promise I'll do better next time. The link below clicks to the preview capsules.

Centennial 20, Sierra Vista 7 -- At Centennial, Humberto Marquez rushed for 141 yards and a touchdown to lead the seventh-ranked Bulldogs past the Lions.
Centennial (6-4) scored first on Wykean Johnson's 8-yard run early in the second quarter.
Johnson set up the score with a 40-yard run one play earlier.
Sierra Vista (3-7) responded with a 20-play, 87-yard drive capped by Jacob Whittaker's 6-yard pass to Brandon Harris, making the score 7-7 with 17 seconds left in the first half.
Marquez's touchdown, on a 73-yard run, gave the Bulldogs the lead for good in the third quarter.
A penalty nullified Matt McClure's interception-return touchdown for Centennial early in the fourth quarter.
But the interception did give the Bulldogs the ball on Sierra Vista's 25, setting up Dexter Brandon's 26-yard touchdown run five plays later.

His fumble recovery at Bonanza's 30 in the third quarter set up Demario Harris' 10-yard touchdown catch.
The Warrior's DaJaun Wilson had 20 carries for 134 yards.
Western held the Bengals to 110 yards of offense, and 46 of that came on a first-quarter touchdown pass from Brett Parry to Alastair Bayardo.
On the ensuing kickoff, Paul returned the ball 92 yards for a touchdown. The victory clinches second place in the Southwest Division for Western.

Trailing 21-6 midway through the fourth quarter, Chaparral had first-and-goal at the Vikings' 8 before Michael Barnes intercepted a Brad Woodward pass at the goal line.
Valley then drove 84 yards on six plays, ending with Cotton's TD.
Sylvester Stephenson returned Woodward's next pass 25 yards for the Vikings' final score.

Faith Lutheran 44, The Meadows 0 -- At The Meadows, John Nixon rushed for 161 yards and three touchdowns on 14 carries as the Crusaders (3-2) defeated the Mustangs (0-5). It was Faith Lutheran's first victory over The Meadows since 1994. Nixon scored on runs of 5, 37 and 25 yards, and Jason Case completed 8 of 14 passes for 122 yards and a touchdown. The Crusaders' Marcus Odor intercepted Jordan Kelley's first pass and returned it 32 yards to start the scoring. Adam Schlachter led the Mustangs with 99 yards rushing, 68 yards coming on his first carry.

It was Faith Lutheran's first victory over The Meadows since 1994. Nixon scored on runs of 5, 37 and 25 yards, and Jason Case completed 8 of 14 passes for 122 yards and a touchdown. The Crusaders' Marcus Odor intercepted Jordan Kelley's first pass and returned it 32 yards to start the scoring. Adam Schlachter led the Mustangs with 99 yards rushing, 68 yards coming on his first carry.

Cimarron-Memorial vs. Eldorado (HS Football)

• Cimarron-Memorial 29, Eldorado 0 -- At Eldorado, Jabrone Newman tackled Sundevils punter Shane Manuele in the end zone for a safety, then returned the ensuing kickoff 59 yards for a touchdown as the ninth-ranked Spartans (2-2) rolled past Eldorado (0-4).
Newman also had an 83-yard fumble return for a touchdown in the third quarter.
Cimarron's Chat Martin had a 72 yards rushing, including touchdown runs of 6 yards and 1 yard.
Brooks led Eldorado with 58 yards rushing on 19 carries.
